Better Bean Yields for Better Lives

Michigan State University researcher and Guatemala native Luis Flores is working to bring new farming practices to his homeland to help reverse the trend of staggering malnutrition in the country. The USAID-funded project MASFRIJOL, meaning “more beans,” aims to increase bean productivity by small farmers, with the ultimate goal of improving the diets of indigenous Mayan children during the first 1,000 days of life. Flores is an assistant professor in the Department of Community Sustainability.
