The Department of Mechanical Engineering in the College of Engineering at Michigan State University invites applications for a tenure-track/tenured faculty position in the general area of dynamics with interest in connected and autonomous vehicles.

Qualifications

Candidates must have an earned doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, with expertise in the topical area listed above.   The position will be filled at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level, depending on the qualifications and record of the successful candidate. The successful candidate is expected to establish a sustainable research program, make significant scholarly contributions to their discipline, be an effective teacher and mentor of both undergraduate and graduate students, and engage in institutional and professional service.

Applicants should have a strong background in dynamics, with demonstrated interest in vehicle applications, which may include, but is not limited to vehicle dynamics and control, connected and autonomous vehicles, drivetrains, vehicle stability, automated lane control, active and semi-active suspensions, and tire-road dynamics.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop an externally funded interdisciplinary research program of national prominence that includes fundamental and applied research, publication in journals and high quality conferences, and education of graduate students. The candidate must have demonstrated evidence of outstanding research accomplishments, teaching skills, and ability to work effectively with other researchers.

Excellent opportunities exist within the departments, college, and university for collaboration with other faculty. The department has strong collaboration with the Connected and Autonomous Networked Vehicles for Active Safety (CANVAS) program in the College of Engineering. The Mechanical Engineering Department currently has 42 faculty members with a strong commitment to research, teaching, and service and is on a growth trajectory. Research and Education focus areas include Solid Mechanics, Design, and Manufacturing, Dynamics and Controls, Fluid-Thermal Science and Engineering, and Biomechanics.
