MSU’s Mackenzie Fights African Disease

Charles Mackenzie is an MSU veterinary pathologist whose research is helping humans at risk of tropical illnesses like elephantiasis, which threatens more than 900 million worldwide. He and collaborators in Tanzania, East Africa, found that the drugs given to break the transmission of the infection also can dramatically improve the condition of people affected with the disease—which causes severe swelling of the limbs—and significantly improve quality of life.
