Gemma Reguera: MSU’s 2016 Innovator of the Year

Michigan State University’s intellectual property office, MSU Technologies, selected Gemma Reguera as Innovator of the Year. Reguera, professor of microbiology and molecular genetics, received the award for her work with byproducts from waste via microbial electrochemical reactors. Her efforts to further develop microbial electrochemical reactors to produce the polymer precursor 1,3-propanediol (PDO) using glycerin as a substitute are particularly innovative, as 1,3-PDO can be used to formulate industrial products such as composites, adhesives, laminates, and polyesters.
