Beginning in fiscal year 2020 (October 1, 2019), the National Institutes for Health will require all investigators to include their Open Researcher and Contributor Identification (ORCID) on new grant proposal submissions. Use of its unique digital identifier helps to connect researchers with their science contributions over time and across changes of name, location and institutional affiliation. NIH encourages not only senior scientists, but also grad students to register for an ORCID. This article from NIH explains ORCID and this new requirement in more detail.
