About 

This interdisciplinary research forum will convene leading researchers, clinicians, and industry innovators to highlight the applications of AI in healthcare. With presentations featuring industry perspectives, MSU experts, and a panel discussion on ethics and policy, this forum is intended for MSU researchers to explore new ideas and advancements of healthcare applications using AI. 

This event is sponsored by the Office of Research and Innovation and the College of Human Medicine. 

Format

Presentations will begin at 2 p.m. in the Frey Foundation Auditorium, room 120. Upon completion of presentations, a networking reception with light refreshments will follow in the Bill & Bea Idema Atrium, room 100.

Speakers

Rahul Deo

Cardiology, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Heart and Vascular Center, Mass General Brigham

Rahul Deo completed medical school at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University (as part of the Tri-Institutional MD/PhD Program) and then trained in Internal Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and in Cardiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital.  He earned a doctorate in Molecular Biophysics from the Rockefeller University, and completed postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School in human genetics and computational biology. From 2011 to 2018, Rahul was an Assistant/Associate Professor within the Department of Medicine at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and Principal Investigator at the UCSF Cardiovascular Institute.  Dr. Deo’s research has prioritized integrating experimental and computational approaches to address problems of heterogeneity in cardiovascular disease.

Mohammad Ghassemi 

Assistant Professor, Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), College of Engineering

Mohammad Ghassemi develops tools and systems that combine human and machine intelligence (A.I.) to solve problems that neither humans nor machines can solve as effectively alone. His research interests include machine learning, data mining, natural language understanding, recommendation systems, decision support, crowd-sourcing, game theory, and human-in-the-loop methodologies. He is especially interested in problem domains where human behavior and judgement must be modeled, and accounted for.

Bree Holtz

Associate Professor, Department of Advertising & Public Relations and Director of the Ethics Institute 

Bree Holtz's research explores the adoption, perceptions, and outcomes of telemedicine, mobile health applications (mHealth), consumer-grade health sensors (e.g., Fitbit, Apple Watch), electronic medical records, artificial intelligence (AI), and social media in health communication. Her work sits at the intersection of health communication, information communication technologies (ICT), and strategic communication for health behavior change. She has a particular interest in the adoption and integration of consumer health technology, telehealth services, and AI in healthcare settings, with the ultimate goal of improving health outcomes and individuals' quality of life.

Rajiv Ranganathan 

Associate Professor, Department of Kinesiology, College of Education

Rajiv Ranganathan's research interests are in the area of motor learning and bio-mechanics. He is particularly interested in how humans produce skilled and coordinated movement, and how this ability is altered in the context of development, aging, and movement disorders. He uses a combination of both experimental techniques - such as motion capture, robotics and virtual reality - as well as bio-mechanical modeling and computer simulations to understand the mechanisms underlying the control of human movement. The overarching goal of his research program is to develop novel training paradigms to facilitate motor skill learning and the rehabilitation of movement disorders.

Tiffany Yu

Principal, 7 Wire Ventures

Tiffany Yu is a Principal at 7wire Ventures where she focuses on investments in digital health and technology-enabled healthcare services businesses. Tiffany was previously a Senior Director at Redesign Health, where she was responsible for new company ideation and creation, as well as portfolio company governance. Prior to Redesign, Tiffany was an investor at Equality Asset Management, a growth-focused private equity fund where she led the firm’s healthcare investments. She began her career in healthcare investing at F-Prime Capital. Tiffany is a co-founder of Breaking 7%, a national community focused on catalyzing women in deal-making capacities.
