This Coffee Break will take participants on a journey through the National Science Foundation Merit Review system. Participants will be introduced to the structure of NSF and the path that proposals take from pre-submission through award or decline. When evaluating NSF proposals, reviewers consider two criteria, Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts. The Intellectual Merit criterion encompasses the potential to advance knowledge; the Broader Impacts criterion encompasses the potential to benefit society and contribute to the achievement of specific, desired societal outcomes. These issues apply both to the technical aspects of the proposal and the way in which the project may make broader contributions. To that end, reviewers are asked to evaluate all proposals against these two criteria.

Our expert and discussion leader is Angela K. Wilson, Michigan State University Hannah Professor of computational chemistry. Wilson, who joined MSU in February 2016, also served as director for the Division of Chemistry at the National Science Foundation from March 2016 through July 2018.
