Krista Campeau, newly appointed Assistant Vice President for Research Security

Krista Campeau, Director of Export Control and Trade Sanctions in the Office of Research and Innovation, has been promoted to Assistant Vice President for Research Security.

Campeau’s extensive experience in research compliance and export control administration has made a significant impact on MSU’s research enterprise since she joined the university in 2022. Her leadership has helped MSU effectively navigate an increasingly complex and evolving regulatory landscape while supporting MSU’s strategic goals.  She was named the Research Security Officer in 2023, a role which has grown significantly as federal guidelines have evolved.

“Research security is a top priority for MSU and requires implementation of processes to protect our researchers, the university, and broader national interests” said Laura McCabe, Associate Vice President for Research Regulatory Support. “It comprehensively encompasses areas involving intellectual property, academic integrity, data security, international engagement, and compliance with federal regulations including the CHIPS and Science Act and National Security Presidential Memorandum (NSPM) 33. The change in title for Krista more accurately reflects her role and expanded scope of responsibilities. Her dedication and leadership have strengthened our research security initiatives.”

Doug Gage, Vice President for Research and Innovation, added “Krista has been doing an excellent job in this key role. Her deep understanding of the regulatory landscape has been critical to supporting MSU’s research mission. In her new position, Krista will have broader responsibility for ensuring MSU’s research security, working with units outside of the research office.”

Before joining MSU, Campeau served as Director of the Export Control and IT Security Oversight Programs in the Office of Research at the University of Michigan.

An attorney and Export Control Officer with extensive experience in higher education, Campeau is highly accomplished in academic research administration, IT security oversight, sponsored research funding mechanisms, contract negotiation, and export controls and trade sanctions.  She routinely participates in national associations such as the NSF SECURE Center, the Council on Government Relations (COGR), the Federal Demonstration Project (FDP), and the Association of University Export Control Officers (AUECO), where she is a regular presenter on topics involving research security and export compliance. She also routinely participates on panels at national meetings.

Campeau will continue to lead MSU’s Office of Export Control and Trade Sanctions (ECTS), which provides oversight and guidance to university researchers for compliance with federal regulations involving export compliance and trade sanctions. ECTS assists research teams in developing compliance plans, provides training, approves plans for access to sensitive technologies, assists with international shipments, and supports researchers in meeting federal regulatory requirements for export compliance. The unit also manages projects with sponsored research restrictions that must be facilitated in coordination with the University Research Organization and assists investigators in developing comprehensive risk mitigation plans.
