The Office of Research and Innovation and the MSU Research Foundation recently celebrated ten years of MSU Research Foundation Professorships during a special event held at the Wharton Center.
Auspicious remarks were made by Dave Washburn, executive director of the MSU Research Foundation; Doug Gage, vice president for Research and Innovation; Thomas Jeitschko, interim provost; and Kevin Guskiewicz, university president. President Guskiewicz noted how the named professorships benefit both the faculty and the university through acknowledgement and esteem. More than that, named professorships are a validation of the research, teaching, and contributions to society of those honored. “It’s also a call to lead – to set an example and be engaged in the advancement of the university and its people,” said Guskiewicz. “And very importantly, we are counting on you to help us grow our culture of innovation.”
To date, 63 professors have received the title “MSU Research Foundation Professor,” with 54 remaining active researchers. These faculty members, representing some of the best and brightest at MSU, are entrusted as leaders to help propel MSU forward, both in research and advancements in innovation.
In keeping with the strategic plan, the MSU Research Foundation Professorship program aligns with the themes of discovery, creativity and innovation for excellence and global impact. “Through the exciting scholarship of these faculty members, MSU continues on a trajectory for excellence.” – Doug Gage, vice president of Research and Innovation.

Established in 2014 through the generosity of the MSU Research Foundation, the university awards the title "MSU Research Foundation Professor" to selected current and new faculty. The title is awarded to assist MSU in recruitment, recognition, and retention of outstanding faculty at all academic ranks, with the primary aim of enhancing the international stature of the institution in research and creative activity.
