MSU Supercomputer Celebrates 20 Years of Accelerating Discovery

The Institute for Cyber-Enabled Research (ICER) marked its 20th anniversary this February with a celebration at the MSU Union Ballroom, highlighting two decades of advancing high-performance computing (HPC) on campus.

Event highlights included:

  • A 3D Timeline Display tracked ICER’s 20-year growth in computing and support.
  • MSU Dairy Store debuted High-Performance Espresso ICER Cream—with liquid-cooling caramel and chocolate computer chips.
  • A poster session showcased impactful research enabled by MSU’s supercomputer. Congratulations to:
    • Naamna Modi earned Best Poster Presentation for “Benchmarking Parallel Code Using R.”
    • Jackson Barnes for earning Best Use of ICER Resources with “Forming planetesimals through the gravitational collapse of pebble clouds.”

ICER Director Dr. Brian O’Shea spoke about the importance of reducing barriers to entry and making it accessible to all academic backgrounds with easier-to-use software and a plethora of support options.

There is a vital need for these cutting-edge computational resources, empowering students, faculty, and researchers across disciplines to accelerate their discoveries. Wishing ICER 20 more years of growth, empowering MSU’s research community—students, faculty, and scholars alike—to push boundaries and accelerate innovation.

Invitation

In 2005, the organization that became the Institute for Cyber-Enabled Research (ICER) turned on its first systems at Michigan State University to help researchers accelerate their discoveries. In 2025, ICER is proud to support thousands of users from diverse fields with our wide range of computing and support resources.

Celebrate ICER's 20th anniversary with MSU Dairy Store "ICER Cream," a 3D ICER timeline exhibit, a poster presentation session, and speeches about the past, present, and future of ICER.
