Michigan State University is helping shape the future of transportation and national defense through a long-standing partnership with the U.S. Army Ground Vehicle Systems Center (GVSC). In 2023, MSU received the first tranche of funding that launched a five-year mobility research initiative focused on developing next-generation lightweight, all-terrain autonomous vehicles. The effort aims to advance technologies that can help maintain the United States' leadership in autonomous mobility while enhancing national security.
A key component of this work is taking place at MSU's Composite Vehicle Research Center (CVRC), which specializes in the design and testing of advanced composite materials and structures for vehicles. Researchers are developing lightweight, durable, and safe vehicle components, along with smart sensing technologies and composite structures that can self-diagnose when issues arise or for routine maintenance. These innovations can help create military vehicles that are stronger, lighter, and more resilient in demanding environments, improving performance while reducing weight and fuel consumption.
Importantly, the research has applications extending beyond defense. Composite materials developed to make Army vehicles lighter and stronger can also improve the safety and efficiency of everyday passenger vehicles and other autonomous systems, such as farm equipment and utility vehicles. Advanced battery technologies designed for military operations can support longer lasting and safer electric vehicles for consumers. Structural health monitoring systems that detect damage in military vehicles could help automate maintenance and improve reliability in commercial cars, trucks, and public transportation.
By bringing together expertise in autonomous systems, advanced materials, energy storage, and vehicle technologies, this partnership is helping to address critical mobility challenges with relevance for both national defense and the broader economy and the vehicles millions of Americans rely on every day. Through this partnership, MSU is not only advancing critical defense and safety technologies but also creating opportunities for students and researchers to develop solutions that strengthen national security and the commercial automotive industry.
