Upcoming Policy and System Update for International Travel and Remote Work Registration

Dear Colleagues,

To support Michigan State University’s commitment to research success and compliance with evolving federal regulations, MSU will soon implement a new policy and upgrade our travel registration system.

Effective March 1, 2026, the policy “Requirement for Registration of MSU International Travel and Remote Work in MSU’s Global Travel and Remote Work Registry” will:

  • Clarify existing travel registration requirements in the Manual of Business Procedures.
  • Apply to MSU personnel conducting federally sponsored research who meet the definition of “Covered Individual.”
  • Define MSU-related Business travel and remote work that must be registered by MSU personnel conducting federally sponsored research.

FAQs and guidance materials are being developed and will be shared to assist with compliance.

In addition, MSU will launch an enhanced Global Travel and Remote Work Registry portal, replacing the current GHSS Global Travel Registry. The new portal will improve usability, streamline registration, and connect campus units that need travel information.

This initiative supports MSU’s mission to advance education, research, and outreach while meeting federal research security requirements.

Further resources and updates will be provided in the coming months. For the latest information, visit MSU’s Research Security Program International Travel webpage. Thank you for your support as we prepare for this important transition.

Best regards,

Douglas A. Gage, Ph.D.
Vice President for Research and Innovation
