Dear Colleagues,
To support Michigan State University’s commitment to research success and compliance with evolving regulatory requirements related to federally sponsored research, international travel, and research security, MSU is implementing a new policy and enhancing its travel registration system.
Effective March 1, 2026, the policy “Requirement for Registration of MSU International Travel and Remote Work in MSU’s Global Travel and Remote Work Registry” will:
- Complement existing travel registration requirements in the Manual of Business Procedures.
- Apply only to MSU personnel conducting federally sponsored research who meet the definition of “Covered Individual.”
- Clarify what types of MSU-related Business travel must be registered by MSU personnel conducting federally sponsored research.
This effort aligns MSU processes with federal regulatory requirements and provides clearer guidance and more coordinated support for international research activities. FAQs and guidance materials can be accessed on the Research Security Program website.
In addition, also effective March 1, 2026, MSU is launching an enhanced Global Travel and Remote Work (GTRW) Registry portal, replacing the legacy International Studies Program (ISP) Global Health Safety and Security Global Travel Registry. The new portal improves usability, streamlines registration, and better connects campus units that provide travel-related support.
The GTRW Registry portal may be accessed through the Research Security Program website or the Office of Global Health, Safety and Security (GHSS) website to register international travel.
MSU remains committed to supporting international collaboration, global engagement, and MSU traveler safety. These enhancements provide clearer alignment and more coordinated support for our MSU research community as federal regulatory requirements continue to evolve.

Thank you for your support as we make this important transition.
