If you are completing the Global Travel and Remote Work Registry, use this page to help determine whether any data, software, materials, or equipment you plan to take with you could be export-controlled. The checklist below highlights common mass-market items that typically do not require additional review for most destinations, as well as research-related materials, non-public data, specialized software, and equipment that may require export control review or additional safeguards.
Are my data, software, materials, or equipment export-controlled?
Check "NO" if your items are any of the following:
- Standard, off the shelf, commercially available laptops
- Commercially available cell phones or tablets
- Mass-market, commercially available software
While technically export-controlled as dual use technologies, these mass-market items leverage license exceptions for MSU personnel traveling to most destinations.
What could be export controlled?
Check "YES" if you are traveling with any of these types of data, materials, software, or equipment:
Research materials
- Biological materials, pathogens, toxins, and microorganisms
- Engineering materials such as semiconductors, integrated circuits
- Specialty chemicals that are not commercially available
- Any other types of hand-carried research materials
Research data
- Data with technical specifications for controlled materials or equipment
- Unpublished data or proprietary designs, models, or analysis
- Dual-use or defense related research information
Software (non-mass-market)
- Custom code linked to sensitive or controlled technologies
- Encryption source code
- Modeling or simulation tools related to aerospace, weapons, or advanced materials
- Prototype research algorithms or source code that are not published or otherwise publicly available
Specialized equipment
- Semiconductors or integrated circuit related technologies
- Drones
- Advanced lasers, sensors, cameras, or imaging systems
- Precision manufacturing or lithography tools
- Unique, customized, or modified scientific instruments
- Any other type of hand-carried, research-related equipment
